SE-101 Legal Issues In Entrepreneurship

Students will be presented with an overview of the various legal forms of ownership including Corporate, Partnership, Limited Liability Companies and Corporations, and Sole Proprietorship. The various liability issues, tax implications and management structures will be examined.

Students will assess the impact and merits of the different forms of ownership in the enterprise of their choice. The course will culminate with the creation, development and implementation of their selected form of ownership to a fictitious business.

SE-102 Business Plans for the Aspiring Entrepreneur

In this course students will learn the fundamental steps to preparing effective business plans. This includes starting the process of writing a business plan, knowing what to do before the business plan is written, and actually preparing the business plan. Students will also learn how to conduct a feasibility analysis as part of their training for compiling a business plan. The culmination of the course will be marked by the completion of the student’s business plan.

SE-103 Microsoft Office 2010 Word Processing, EXCEL, & Power Point

This course provides instructions related to the fundamentals of Microsoft Office 2010 Word for Windows, EXCEL, and Power Point. Through a combination of the completion of specified exercises from the instructor as well as Webinar meetings with the instructor, students will gain hands-on experience related to three of the basic features of Microsoft Office 2010 programs which are most relevant to starting, maintaining, and or growing one’s business.

SE-104 E-commerce: Leveling the Playing Field

This course will focus on how to build a lucrative E-Commerce strategy. The course will recognize E-Commerce as a potentially global phenomenon for the small business, and will provide students with a fundamental background on how to maximize E-Commerce returns. Students will be trained to become successful E-Commerce entrepreneurs through the development and/or refinement of strategies for building a website that is designed to not only attract consumers, but to convert them into paying customers.*

SE-105 Introduction to Marketing

In this course, students will gain a broad perspective of strategic considerations of the marketer an understanding of the target market and the marketing mix. By developing and refining a market-based strategic thinking perspective, students will develop the knowledge necessary to market their products and/or services effectively.

SE-106 Entrepreneurial Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities

This course provides an overview for the aspiring entrepreneur with a disability. Topics surveyed include entrepreneurship as a source of innovation, business performance, business start-ups, and company organization. Through scenario building and analysis, students will problem-solve many of the key dilemmas associated with starting, funding, and growing their disability-friendly business.

SE-107 Human Resources Management Practices in Small Businesses

Students will gain a practical understanding of the role of recruitment, selection, training, performance evaluation, and succession planning for the small business venture. An additional emphasis is placed on the review of recommended management practices for supervisors managing within a small business. The course will culminate with the students designing their own management succession program in anticipation of the growth of their business.

SE-108 Introduction to Quick books/Bookkeeping

In this course students will gain a fundamental background of bookkeeping skills that are necessary to operate a small business enterprise. The student will gain step-by-step instructions on how to set up their company accounts. The student will also gain knowledge on how to create an invoice, make purchases and record payments, and collect and pay sales tax.

SE-109 Entrepreneurial Finance

This course explores the principles of finance from the perspective of the first-time entrepreneur seeking to launch their business venture. Students will be introduced to concepts that will prepare them to manage the various issues faced by the entrepreneur. Essential accounting functions and finance practices will presented for those with limited or no prior exposure. Concepts that will be considered:

  • An introduction to principles and formulas
  • Obtaining sources of funding
  • Determining which financial responsibilities and roles can be taken in-house and which to out source
  • Risk management
  • Investment Vehicles
  • Harvest/Exit strategy

SE-110 Introduction to HTML Programming

Introduction to HTML Programming covers the concepts of the World Wide Web, E-Commerce, Web Site planning and design, and HTML, Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) and Java Script programming languages. Students learn how to use HTML, CSS and Java Script programming languages to build professional and functional web pages that provide useful services to web site visitors. Students are assigned weekly programming projects and a term length Web Site project that incorporates the topics and techniques covered throughout the course.

SE-111 Navigating Disabilities

In this course, the student will learn how to request and provide reasonable accommodations in the workplace. The student will also learn how to be mentored by state, federal, and nonprofit agencies designed to assist entrepreneurs with disabilities. Students will become familiar with how to obtain information on disability and self-employment related topics. Emphasis will be placed on gaining familiarity with the various services offered to the self-employed with disabilities.

SE-112 Introduction To Home Based Businesses

In this course students will learn the fundamental steps to preparing to start their own home-based business. Students will be exposed to a number of different home-based businesses throughout the semester while focusing on how to make one of these businesses or a business of the students’ choice more viable. Students will survey a variety of issues related to the development of home-based businesses.

SE-200 Strategic Capstone Seminar

In this course students will refine and enhance their knowledge gained in previous foundation courses in the program. As the capstone course, students are expected to culminate their respective efforts and plans developed in such courses as The Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship and The Business Plan for the Entrepreneur. The course concludes with an expanded business plan as the finished product of the program.
